David Atchison became U.S. President on this day in 1849 when Zachary Taylor refused to be sworn in on a Sunday. Atchison, Pro Tempore of the Senate, automatically became President at noon, appointed his close friends to the Cabinet, and went to bed early. His 24-hour presidency was the most peaceful and most uncorrupt in U.S. history.

Chicago restaurant sculptor Dwight Kalb immortalized actress Brooke Shields on this day in 1982 by sculpting her likeness in 30 pounds of chopped liver.      Today Chastity (Chaz) Bono turns 41. As a female, Chastity went through a phase of infatuation with rock musicians. The trick was finding one that her mom hadn't dated.

Chastity Trivia: Chastity was named for the 1960 movie "Chastity," which dad Sonny wrote and starred Cher as a runaway teenager searching for the meaning of life. The movie lost a half-million dollars and almost bankrupt the Bonos.

The federal government established Hot Springs National Park on this date in 1921. Hot Springs National Park is in Arkansas. If it was in Washington, it would called Hot Air National Park.
